How To Calculate Fuel Cost?

Our fuel cost calculator's process is designed to help you calculate the amount of gasoline you need and your travel expenses.

To determine how much fuel you require, please use the following formula from our fuel cost calculator:

Fuel amount = Distance / Fuel efficiency

For example, if you plan to drive a car that travels 5 kilometers per liter of fuel for a distance of 100 kilometers, please substitute these values into the above formula:

Fuel amount = 100 / 5 = 20 liters

Additionally, our calculator will also calculate the total cost of your trip based on the fuel amount and gasoline price in your area. To do this, we use the following formula:

Trip cost = Fuel amount × Fuel price

Therefore, using the fuel amount given in the previous example, if the gasoline price is $7, to calculate the total amount required for the trip, we simply substitute these values into the formula, resulting in:

Trip cost = 20 × 7 = $140

How to Enjoy a Road Trip on a Tight Budget?

If you're planning a road trip during your holidays but have a limited budget, here are some practical tips for you:

Travel during the off-season. Off-season vacation rental fees are relatively lower. This is because demand for these places is lower at this time, so owners and agents reduce prices to attract more tourists.

Try road tripping with people who are willing to share the costs. Cost-sharing can reduce your personal expenses. For example, if the fuel cost for the trip is $1000, by splitting the cost with five friends, you will pay less. You can use our fuel cost calculator for this purpose.

Try camping to reduce accommodation costs. Campsite fees are more affordable than regular hotels.

Explore some interesting and entertaining activities that you and your friends can do for free or at a low cost. For example, use a map to explore with your group instead of hiring a guide.

Pack some food that you can quickly eat on the road instead of eating at restaurants. Food costs can consume a significant portion of your vacation budget. Therefore, finding ways to save money can determine the number and type of activities you can participate in.

Long-Distance Travel: Is Driving or Flying Cheaper?

Considering additional expenses such as food and accommodation for several days, the cost of a long-distance self-drive trip may be much higher than flying. Of course, this comparison can be affected by the following factors:

  • Number of travelers;
  • Whether costs are shared;
  • Type of accommodation used.

How Do I Calculate Fuel Costs?

To estimate fuel costs, we use one of the following formulas:

  • Fuel Cost = (Distance / MPG) × Cost per Gallon
  • Fuel Cost = (Distance / [100 × Gallons Consumed per 100 Miles]) × Cost per Gallon

If you know your car's efficiency in miles per gallon (mpg), use the first formula. On the other hand, if fuel consumption is measured in gallons per 100 miles, we use the second formula.

How to Calculate Monthly Fuel Expenses?

To estimate monthly fuel expenses:

  1. Multiply the daily distance by the number of days in the month.
  2. Divide the result by your vehicle's efficiency in miles per gallon.
  3. Multiply the answer by the price per gallon.

How Much Does a Gallon of Gasoline Weigh?

In the United States, a gallon of gasoline weighs approximately 6.073 pounds.

Gasoline contains additives that affect its final weight. Additives vary by country. Therefore, it is not possible to give an exact weight globally.
